In the Sahel, aid workers are increasingly facing a new threat: drone strikes near checkpoints, populated areas, and aid vehicles—especially in regions affected by armed activity.
To support humanitarian operations in these settings, Insecurity Insight has developed a new resource: Security Measures against Drone Strikes: Guidance for the Protection of Aid Workers and Aid Operations.
Designed for local aid agencies and their international partners, this practical guide offers:
- Strategies for dealing with drone threats, including how to conduct effective risk assessments
- Guidance on identifying feasible protective measures, and key components to include in emergency response plans
- Practical advice for personal and travel safety, available as modular, individual resources
- General guidance that can be adapted to specific operational contexts and environments
This guidance is intended to enhance preparedness, improve operational resilience, and protect lives in an evolving security landscape. Currently available in English and French, with Arabic coming soon.
Individual resources:
- Outside when a drone is spotted: English and French
- Inside a building during a drone attack: English and French
- Guidance on approaching a landed drone: English and French
- Dealing with drones while travelling: English and French
Use these resources in staff briefings, training materials, and office posters.
