UN Secretary-General’s Call to Action to Transform World Beyond 2015

New report outlines vision of ‘dignity’ for humanity

New York City – United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today said the international community was poised to take a “major step” towards sustainable development for all.

Speaking at the launch of an advance version of his synthesis report, ‘The Road to Dignity by 2030: Ending Poverty, Transforming All Lives and Protecting the Planet’, the Secretary-General said that now is an “era of transformation” as UN Member States continue their negotiations on a universal, transformative agenda to “finish the job” begun by the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

The Synthesis Report takes stock of progress already made through the “remarkable global mobilization” behind the MDGs. It looks to a future which “places people and planet at the centre, is underpinned by human rights, and is supported by a global partnership.”

The Report will be formally published on December 31. It comes at a crucial time as UN Member States proceed with negotiations on the post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals.

The international community has come a long way since the process for setting a development agenda beyond 2015 was set in motion after the Rio+20 UN Conference on Sustainable Development in 2012.

The Secretary-General noted that, over the past two years, Member States, the UN system, experts, and a cross-section of civil society, business, and millions of people from all corners of the globe had come together with creativity and a shared sense of purpose.

The Synthesis Report draws from and informs those continuing discussions. It identifies six essential elements for delivering on the SDG’s: Dignity; Prosperity; Justice; Partnership; Planet and People. These elements are designed to offer conceptual guidance for the negotiations ahead.

UN Development Programme (UNDP) Administrator Helen Clark said, “As the lead agency of for co-ordination of the UN development system, UNDP stands ready to work with Member States and their partners in their efforts to agree on and deliver an ambitious agenda which will improve the lives of people everywhere. Let’s not miss the ‘post-2015 opportunity.”
