Insecurity Insight documented 110 publicly reported incidents of conflict-related sexual violence (CRSV) between 01 January and 31 May 2025 in 23 countries and territories.1 At least 52 CRSV incidents were documented in Burundi, with nearly three-quarters involving children who were attacked while traveling, inside their homes, in police stations or after being kidnapped. Nearly of half of these incidents were attributed to members of the National Council for the Defense of Democracy-Forces for the Defense of Democracy (CNDD-FDD), with a further 37% attributed to members of the Imbonerakure youth league, an auxiliary to local law enforcement and the military. The Burundi Armed Forces were also named as perpetrators of CRSV. Civilians fleeing conflict in DRC fleeing and seeking refugee in Burundi face a heightened risk of sexual violence. In the first half of 2025, the number of refugee children reporting such violence more than tripled compared to the same period in 2024, according to Save the Children.
