Removing Small Arms from Society: A Review of Weapons Collection and Destruction Programmes

Drawing attention to some of the main lessons learned and key elements of best practice, this paper seeks to provide a broad overview of practice in the removal of small arms from society. For this purpose, it examines the following issues:

- Practical disarmament and crime prevention
- Practical disarmament and peace building
- Funding
- Regional practice and key steps in planning and implementation of a weapons collection programme

The report does not aim to give a comprehensive treatment of the subject of weapons collection, but seeks to provide a broadly representative account of practice and point to some of the main lessons learned.
