The Vanuatu Government has declared a state of emergency for the island of Ambae and raised the official alert level to four (indicating a moderate eruption ; level five is the highest) as seismic activity increased in recent days from the Monaro volcano. Approximately 8,000 people on Ambae Island were evacuated to over 30 evacuation centers (EC) across the Island. The Government of Vanuatu deployed WASH and food security specialists to Ambae to support provincial authorities for evacuation center management.

On 28 September, the government decided to evacuate the entire population of 11,600 people of Ambae Island to neighbouring islands. As of 2 October, approximately 3,500 people from Ambae Island have arrived at Santo, Sanma Province. Twenty-four EC have been identified to cater for displaced persons. The government aims for the entire population to be evacuated by 6 October.
