Meningococcal disease

  • Fiji: The Ministry of Health and Medical Services (MHMS) has been working closely with the Ministry of Education and World Health Organization (WHO) to address the recent outbreak of meningococcal disease in a boarding school in the Eastern health division. There have been eight (8) cases, of which are four (4) are confirmed, including one fatal case. Testing of suspected case samples, facilitated by WHO, at the Microbiological Diagnostic Unit, Public Health laboratory, University of Melbourne confirmed that meningococcal serogroup C is responsible for this outbreak. In response to the outbreak, the MHMS this week are vaccinating the school cohort with the meningococcal vaccine, Sanofi Pasteur Menactra. Source: Fiji MHMS.

Dengue

  • As of 10 July there have been 376 cases since 10 October 2016, including three (3) deaths in patients with pre-existing medical conditions and late presentation to hospital in Palau. The number of cases is decreasing. Source: Palau Ministry of Health dengue situation report 16 July 2017.
