Events since the Millennium Declaration
demand that consensus be revitalized on key challenges and priorities and
converted into collective action. The Secretary-General's report proposes
an agenda to be taken up, and acted upon, by all Member States.
The report consists of 4 parts:
1. Freedom of want - Make the
right to development a reality for everyone and free the entire human race
from want.
2. Freedom from fear - Embrace
a broad vision of collective security, not just international war and conflict
but also poverty, deadly infectious disease and environmental degradation.
3. Freedom to live in dignity - Promote
democaracy and strengthen the rule of law as well as respect for all internationlly
recognized human rights and fundamental freedoms
4. Strengthening the United Nations
- The UN must be fully adapted to the needs and circumstances of the
21st century to respond to the challenges laid out in the previous three
parts.
