How can teachers support children and youth with migration and refugee experience?

Expert debate during the "Cooperation without Borders" forum organized by the Institute for Educational Research and UNICEF.

On June 26, 2024, the Institute for Educational Research in collaboration with UNICEF Refugee Response Office in Poland organized an online Expert Forum titled "Cooperation without Borders - Teachers Support Children and Youth with Migration and Refugee Experience." The event was part of the "Accessible School for All" project.

Over 1000 viewers have watched the event: school principals, teachers, specialist teachers in preschools, mainstream schools, teacher training institutions, psychological and pedagogical counselling centres, representatives of non-governmental organizations, and parents.

Experts raised important and current issues related to inclusive and intercultural education, in which the needs of students with migration and refugee experience are recognized and met with appropriate educational, pedagogical, and specialized actions. Representatives of the Ministry of National Education, the UNICEF Refugee Response Office in Poland, the Institute for Educational Research, experts and practitioners presented practical measures taken to support this specific group of students in educational, psychosocial, and organizational aspects.

"The Accessible School for All project, undertaken in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and IBE, serves as a pilot initiative aimed at catalysing extensive changes to create a more inclusive school environment that accommodates the diverse needs of refugee and other children”, says Aleksandra Duda, Early Childhood Development Specialist at the UNICEF Refugee Response Office in Poland. “The project is timely in addressing the needs and challenges associated with mandatory schooling for children from Ukraine.”

Participants also had the opportunity to learn about the activities carried out in the "Accessible School for All” project and the plans for new initiatives addressing the changing social and educational situations of children and students with migration experience, as well as refugee students from Ukraine.

Since the beginning of the project in May 2023, over 1,300 teachers from over 530 institutions have been enhancing their skills as part of a comprehensive training to support children and students by addressing their diverse developmental and educational needs.
