Drought conditions spreading in areas of Southern Africa; flooding persists in Tanzania and Zambia

Africa Weather Hazards

  1. Flooding continues in the Sudd wetlands in South Sudan.

  2. Abnormally dry conditions are affecting central and southern Angola, northeastern Namibia, southeastern Zambia, northern Botswana, southern Zimbabwe, and parts of Mozambique due to a delayed start to the rainy season and insufficient rainfall. Large rainfall deficits over the past two months have led to drought conditions in western and southern Zambia, southeastern Angola, Zimbabwe, and central Mozambique.

  3. Floods persist in eastern DRC, Burundi, northern Zambia, and southern Tanzania.
Further heavy rainfall during the outlook period could exacerbate the ongoing floods.

  4. A large area of Madagascar is experiencing widespread flooding due to heavy rain over the past three weeks; additional expected rainfall may worsen the situation.

  5. Heavy rainfall is continuing across northwestern Angola and driving rising river levels.

  6. Abnormally high, above-average temperatures are expected in many parts of Southern Africa.

Note

The Hazards outlook map is based on current weather/climate information, short and medium-range weather forecasts (up to one week), sub-seasonal forecasts up to four weeks, and assesses the potential impact of extreme events on crop and pasture conditions. Shaded polygons are added in areas where anomalous conditions have been observed and predicted to continue during the outlook period. The boundaries of these polygons are only approximate at the spatial scale of the map. This product considers long-range seasonal climate forecasts but does not reflect current or projected food security conditions. FEWS NET is a USAID-funded activity whose purpose is to provide objective information about food security conditions.
