Global Overview: ENSO-neutral conditions are present; however, La Niña is favored to develop during July-September. Dryness is expanding in eastern Northern South America and western East Africa. Meanwhile, flooding is expected in portions of Central America and southern West Africa.
Africa Weather Hazards
Floods will continue in the Gulf of Guinea due to above-average rainfall; Dry conditions have increased in East Africa's western region.
1. Inundation continues in the Sudd wetlands of South Sudan.
2. Recent and forecasted heavy rainfall will likely cause flooding in eastern Sudan and northwestern Ethiopia.
3. Flooding occurs in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan area in South Africa. Heavy rainfall and strong winds have also been affecting the Cape Town city area.
4. Eastern Liberia, southwestern Cote d’Ivoire, eastern Nigeria, and western Cameroon are experiencing abnormal dryness due to below-average rainfall since April. This has led to drought conditions in eastern Nigeria and western Cameroon due to large deficits over the last two months.
5. Flooding occurs in Monrovia in Liberia, Abidjan in Cote d’Ivoire, Maradi in Niger, the Niger and Abuja States in Nigeria. Flooding is expected in southern Guinea, Sierra Leone, and southwestern Nigeria due to forecasted heavy and above-average rainfall.
6. Portions of Congo-Kinshasa, South Sudan, and Uganda face abnormal dryness. The dryness has increased over the past two months, leading to a drought in northern Uganda.
7. Hot conditions will continue in Western Sahara, Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania, Egypt, and Sudan
