Abnormally dry conditions worsen in much of Southern Africa; floods continue in Tanzania and Zambia

Africa Weather Hazards

  1. Flooding persists in the Sudd wetlands in South Sudan.

  2. Due to a delayed start to the rainy season followed by insufficient rainfall, abnormally dry conditions are present across central and eastern Angola, northeastern Namibia, northern Botswana, Zimbabwe, central Mozambique, and western Madagascar. Large moisture deficits have led to drought in Zambia.

  3. Flooding persists in eastern DRC, Burundi, Nigeria, and South Sudan. Heavy rainfall has caused flooding and landslides in parts of Tanzania, leading to casualties and damage. Further heavy rainfall during the outlook period could exacerbate the situation.

  4. Heavy rainfall has raised flooding risk in northern and eastern Madagascar.

  5. The Congo River has reached its highest recorded levels due to continued heavy rainfall.

  6. Abnormally high temperatures are forecast for much of Southern Africa, as well as northern Senegal and western Mauritania.

Note The Hazards outlook map is based on current weather/climate information, short and medium-range weather forecasts (up to one week), sub-seasonal forecasts up to four weeks, and assesses the potential impact of extreme events on crop and pasture conditions. Shaded polygons are added in areas where anomalous conditions have been observed and predicted to continue during the outlook period. The boundaries of these polygons are only approximate at the spatial scale of the map. This product considers long-range seasonal climate forecasts but does not reflect current or projected food security conditions. FEWS NET is a USAID-funded activity whose purpose is to provide objective information about food security conditions.
