Global Price Watch: March 2012 Food Prices (April 30, 2012)

Attachments

The Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET) monitors trends in staple food prices in countries vulnerable to food insecurity. The Price Watch provides an update on trends in selected urban centers. Prices for key markets and commodities monitored are made available in the Price Watch Annex.

  • In East Africa, staple food prices were stable or increased seasonally in March. In Sudan and South Sudan, prices have been high, and they continued to increase in March. Prices have also remained high in deficit areas such as northeastern Kenya.

  • Staple food prices were stable or declined in Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, and Zimbabwe in March as green and early harvests led to an improvement in food availability at the household level and as the marketing of old stocks strengthened the supply on local markets.

  • In West Africa, cereal prices in many markets in the Sahel were stable in March as traders brought adequate supplies from surplus areas and food assistance interventions alleviated some of the pressure on local markets. However, several markets in surplus areas in the Sudanian zone showed an increasing pressure on available supplies.

  • In Central America, maize and bean prices have remained stable for the past few months as supplies from the Postrera harvests have been adequate.

  • In Afghanistan and Tajikistan, wheat and wheat flour prices remained stable or continued to slightly decline in March.
