2023 Global Humanitarian Overview (GHO)

Requirements for the 2023 GHO have increased from $51.5 billion at the beginning of the year to $54.2 billion as of the end of March. The GHO aims to assist 240 million of the 348 million people in need of aid in 69 countries.

Reported GHO funding as of end of March 2023 totalled $5.4 billion. This is more than the amount of GHO funding reported at the end of March 2022. Details on funding by plan are available here. Total reported humanitarian funding1 for 2023 reached $9 billion at the end of March.

NEW The Malawi Cholera and Floods Flash Appeal (February – June) was launched on 31 March. This appeal builds on the Malawi Cholera Flash Appeal launched on 9 March in response to Malawi’s deadliest cholera outbreak in recorded history and its largest in the last two decades. The appeal requires $115 million to assist 4.8 million of the 5.9 million people in need due to the cholera outbreak and the damage and destruction caused by extreme weather and floods in the wake of Tropical Cyclone Freddy.

On 20 March, the European Commission and the Swedish Presidency of the Council of the European Union hosted an International Donors' Conference in Brussels to support the people affected by the earthquakes in Türkiye and Syria. The total multi-year pledges of grants and loans announced at the donor conference amounted to €7 billion, of which €950 million were announced for assistance in Syria.
