Global Emergency Overview Weekly Picks, 18 July 2017
DRC
Since 22 June, 60,000 new IDPs from Kasai region are in need of protection, health and food.
Since late June, an estimated 80,000 people have fled from Fizi territory due to violence between Mayi-Mayi armed groups and the FARDC. High needs of shelter, WASH, health and protection have been reported.
On 11 July, a cholera outbreak due to unsafe water usage was declared in Goma, Nord-Kivu, with 450-580 suspected cases and four deaths recorded from 26 June-11 July.
Iraq
Needs of IDP returnees are high following the liberation of Mosul from Islamic State (IS) control on 10 July.
As of 17 July, at least 222,000 IDPs who fled since October 2016 have returned to Mosul and surrounding areas in Ninewa governorate. They lack access to food, water, electricity, and adequate shelter, and also face high protection risks due to the presence of unexploded ordnance (UXO). Poor conditions in IDP camps, exacerbated by the summer heat, are significant push factors for returnees. Access to Mosul is severely constrained with over 100km of roads damaged and contaminated.
Kenya
As of June, nutrition is deteriorating in nine arid counties (Turkana, Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Isiolo, Baringo, Samburu, Garissa, and West Pokot) because of increasingly difficult food access due to the drought.
In Turkana county, GAM rates over 30% are recorded in three of the four sub-counties, with some SAM rates between 6-12% reported. Turkana South is of most concern with 37% GAM and 12% SAM.
