Global Annual Results Report 2023: Goal Area 1 - Every child survives and thrives

Attachments

Highlights

As part of the broader Global Annual Results Report, the Goal Area 1 Chapter presents results on two interconnected programmes: Health and HIV/AIDS, and Child Nutrition and Development. The overall aim of this work is to ensure that every child, including every adolescent, survives and thrives with access to a nutritious and diverse diet, quality primary health care (PHC) services, nurturing care practices and essential supplies. UNICEF’s efforts to advance these outcomes supports achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly 2 and 3.

Programmes in Goal Area 1 cover eight result areas. Several cross-cutting priorities and programmes are entrenched within the work undertaken in these result areas, including disability inclusion, gender, climate action and peacebuilding.

Children’s rights to health and nutrition are undermined by inequities. UNICEF works with partners to reach children and communities wherever they may be, to realize every child’s right to survive, grow up and develop to their full potential. The organization prioritizes the most disadvantaged and marginalized children in population groups, with a focus on equitable access. Overall, results were strong in the face of ongoing challenges including the impacts of increasing inequities, climate-related natural disasters, persistent and new conflicts, and a global food and nutrition crisis.

Headline results:

  • More than 400 million children vaccinated against polio and over 130 million children vaccinated against measles, including 32 million in humanitarian contexts.
  • 34 million live births delivered in UNICEF-supported health facilities across 86 countries.
  • Over 430 million children, pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers reached with policies, programmes, and services for the prevention of malnutrition in early childhood
