The Joint Standards Initiative (JSI) was set up by HAP, People In Aid and the Sphere Project to seek greater coherence amongst quality and accountability standards in humanitarian assistance. We consulted over 2,000 people across 114 countries on the above. The outcome of this and the subsequent Humanitarian Forum was a commitment by the three agencies to:

  • Strengthen awareness of quality and accountability and standards within humanitarian actors

  • Work on harmonising the standards ‘architecture’ in the sector

  • Create a Core Humanitarian Standard.

The Core Humanitarian Standard (CHS), now in development, seeks to help organisations and their staff:

  • Identify how they can become more accountable to crisis-affected populations,

  • Put in place, and into practice, ways of working to ensure they are committed to quality and accountability,

  • Verify the extent to which they are committed to the Core Humanitarian Standard,

  • Inform staff where the Core Humanitarian Standard fits in relation to Humanitarian Principles and the technical standards which exist to support their work.

The first draft of the Core Humanitarian Standard is currently out for consultation and we would welcome your feedback. The survey can be found here. The deadline for feedback is 31 March 2014.
