Abu Dhabi, 7th April, 2015 (WAM) -- The Emirates Red Crescent's higher committee for foreign aid has allocated AED 24. 6 million for international relief operations with Iraqi Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and Syrian refugees in Iraq's Kurdistan region taking the lion's share of AED 18.1 million.

The ERC will undertake sheltering and education projects for Iraqi IDPs and Syrian refugees in Kurdistan to meet the needs of new refugees' influx as a result of the evolving events, which have created a new reality. To leverage its response to the humanitarian situation in Iraq, the ERC will scale up its operations there to ease the suffering and improve living conditions.

In its first meeting of the year, the committee also approved AED 6.13 million worth of cash assistance for underprivileged in Somali, Morocco, Philippines, Iraq, Syria, Palestine, Egypt and Serbia. Medical assistance worth AED 403,370 will be given to patients with chronic diseases in India, Yemen, Afghanistan, Palestine, Syria, Lebanon and Egypt.

Relief and humanitarian programmes to the tune of AED 5.17 million will be carried out in Palestine, which receives special attention of the ERC due to the desperate need there for essential services.
