'The State of the World's Girls 2009' is the third in a series of annual reports by Plan which document the situation of girls on a global scale. By drawing attention to the significant yet undervalued contribution that girls currently make to the global economy, the report asserts that a continued lack of investment in girls will restrict global economic growth. Now more than ever before, it is imperative to invest fully in girls as the global financial crisis exerts a devastating and disproportionate toll on girls worldwide. It is estimated that in Africa in 2009 alone, an extra 50,000 babies will die before their first birthday as a direct and immediate result of the global economic crisis. Most of these babies will be girls. Now is the time to take action.
