To guide water-related initiatives, USAID and the Department of State have developed a "Framework for Action," which lays out the guiding principles for U.S. foreign assistance strategic action in the water sector.
The Framework outlines three key program
areas for USAID missions to invest in around the world:
- increasing access to water supply
and sanitation, and promoting better hygiene
- improving water resources management
among competing needs
- improving water productivity, especially
in agriculture and industry.
The Framework provides U.S. embassies
and USAID missions with guidelines for programming resources and developing
activities within their host countries. It also serves to inform country-level
counterparts and other members of the international water community about
the U.S. Government's strategic direction within the water sector, facilitating
improved collaboration, communication, and shared learning.
