Report of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights

Summary

The present report, submitted pursuant to Human Rights Council resolution 54/5, provides specific recommendations on how to develop accessible, inclusive, equitable and quality education for peace and tolerance for every child, especially children in the most vulnerable situations, and how to incorporate it into educational programmes. It includes the outcome of the panel discussion held at the fifty-seventh session of the Human Rights Council.

The report focuses on the importance of establishing elements of education systems that promote social cohesion, with particular attention to children from marginalized groups, children affected by armed conflict and children associated, or allegedly associated, with armed forces and non-State armed groups. The recommendations support States in ensuring a safe, supportive and rights-based educational environment for children in accordance with international human rights law, including the Convention on the Rights of the Child, and emphasize the critical role of quality education in achieving sustainable development and global peace and security.
