The theme of the 2024 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence was “Disarm to Empower: Stop the Silence, End Gender-Based Violence!” It focuses on the dangerous intersection of gender-based violence (GBV) and gun violence. It calls for urgent action to address the deadly combination of firearms and abuse, whether in the home, conflict zones, or intimate partner violence. GBV involves any act of violence targeting an individual on the basis of their gender. GBV encompasses violence against people based on their perceived or real sexual orientation, gender identity or expression and sexual characteristics.
As part of IANSA’s project with the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA) through contributions received from the European Union, small stipends were given to IANSA members to undertake activities during the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.
Also, with support from the UN Trust Facility Supporting Cooperation on Arms Regulation (UNSCAR), two IANSA members organised online activities linking the campaign and focused on strengthening the implementation of the Programme of Action on Small Arms (PoA) and the International Tracing Instrument (ITI). These online activities centered on empowering civil society actors to advocate for arms control and disarmament, linking these efforts to gender-based violence prevention.
This report highlights campaign activities organised by IANSA members and includes members’ engagement with community leaders, authority officials, and government officials to gain support for measures to reduce armed violence and implement strict firearms controls. It also includes an overview of social media participation online from members and supporters from all regions around the globe.
We are grateful for the continued support of our network members!
