Vietnam - Storms and Floods OCHA Situation Report No.3

General Situation
1. This week, after causing substantial damage in the Philippines, Typhoon Faith ravaged central Vietnam. The following seven provinces have been most affected: Khanh Hoa, Phu Yen, Quang Nam, Ninh Thuan, Quang Ngai, Ben Tre and Binh Thuan. The economic loss is estimated at VND 204,514 million (USD 15 million).

2. On 17 December, the Standing Office of the Central Committee for Flood and Storm Control (CCFSC) issued a preliminary report on damage caused by Storm Gil (which hit Ca Mau province on 12 December) and by Typhoon Faith. The report provides the following information:

Death toll
Households evacuated
People in need of relief
Houses destroyed
Houses flooded/damaged
Rice fields inundated
Rice fields destroyed
4,377 ha
Other crops damaged
Dykes damaged
382 m
Canals damaged
Hydraulic structures damaged
Telephone poles destroyed

3. OCHA is in close contact with the UNDP Office in Hanoi to monitor developments and to update information.
