Objective
To strengthen animal health systems in order to reduce the risks and impact of emerging infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance and biothreats through an inclusive One Health approach.
Activities implemented
• Completed ten sampling rounds at live bird markets to detect avian influenza viruses, collecting and testing a total of 24 500 single swabs from live chickens, ducks and the environment.
• Organized national meetings to share surveillance results and conduct multisectoral risk assessments for priority zoonotic diseases.
• Fostered the development of a laboratory network for veterinary pathogen diagnosis and antimicrobial susceptibility testing.
• Conducted a survey to measure levels of compliance with the prescription circular and the impact of trainings in veterinary drugstores.
• Produced videos and training materials for drugstore owners to improve antimicrobial usage practices.
• Developed two comprehensive training packages on animal management and farm biosecurity practices for small- and medium-scale pig breeding and fattening farms.
• Implemented these training packages through 15 training courses for 161 local extension officers and workers and 189 farmers.
• Supported public–private partnerships to develop a traceability system for the bird nest export production chain.
Results
• Strengthened the information-sharing capacities of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to better mitigate risks and manage health threats from many different animals.
• Enhanced the knowledge of staff in 60 veterinary drugstores on prudent antimicrobial usage.
• Improved the capacities of the Department of Animal Health and relevant stakeholders in early detection and response to avian influenza health threats.
• Reduced the use of antibiotics by 40–50 percent and increased reproductive productivity by 10–15 percent in eight model pig farms.
• Enabled two swiftlet bird companies to meet Chinese importation requirements and to thus export their products to China.
