Philippines, Viet Nam, Lao PDR, Thailand, Myanmar - Tropical cyclone YAGI and Southwest Monsoon, update (DG ECHO Partners, Governments) (ECHO Daily Flash of 15 September 2024)

  • Heavy rains from Typhoon Yagi's remnants have resulted in significant flooding and damage in Viet Nam, Laos, Thailand, and Myanmar.
  • In Viet Nam, search and rescue continue. The typhoon displaced over 74,500 families, closed schools and disrupted healthcare. 168,000 homes were damaged, 100,000 households were evacuated. 1,900 people were injured. Three joint assessments were conducted in Lao Cai-Yen Bai, Quang Ninh and Hai Phong provinces. The government will present initial results on 17 September.
  • In Myanmar, torrential rains have severely impacted Nay Pyi Taw, Mandalay, Magway, Bago Regions, Shan, Mon, Kayah, and Kayin States. While information is still being gathered, at least 41 people have died, with several missing, according to the de facto authorities. Food, medicine, drinking water are urgent needs.
  • In Laos, flash floods have impacted 14 provinces. Around 51,440 people are affected by the flooding, which has disrupted daily life and critical infrastructures, including homes, roads, agricultural land, health centers, schools, and electricity services.
