AHA Centre Situation Update No. 2: Landslides and Flash Floods in Northern Viet Nam, Friday, 4 Aug 2017, 17:00 hrs (UTC+7)

Highlights

  • Landslides occur in Nam-Ho Dien Bien districts of Lai Chau Province, Mu Chang Chai districts of Yen Bai Province, Muong La districts of Son La Province.
  • Total damage estimated at 538.2 billion VND or approximately equivalent to 24 million USD.
  • Latest reports indicated the following casualties: 9 deaths, 24 missing, 12 injured, and 196 houses washed away or collapsed. Additionally 75 houses were affected by landslides, and 125 houses unroofed.
  • In order to assist the victims, the local authority has mobilised personnel and resources to repair the damaged to infrastructure and properties. Damage assessment is currently being conducted.

Summary of Disaster Event

The continuous rainfall, with the flash floods and landslides had caused some damaged. Based on the situation update no.2 as of 4 August 2017 from the Central steering Committee of Natural Disaster Prevention and Control (CCNDPC) of Viet Nam confirmed the following:

  • Number of death: 09 (Yen Bai: 2, Son La: 6, Lai Chau: 1)
  • Missing: 24 (Yen Bai: 12, Son La: 10 people, Lai Chau: 2)
  • Injured: 12 persons
  • Houses collapsed: 196 houses were washed away, completely collapsed (Yen Bai: 29, Son La: 167);
  • Houses affected: 75 houses by landslide (Yen Bai: 25, Son La: 43, Dien Bien: 7); 102 houses were unroofed (Cao Bang: 37 houses, Dien Bien: 65 houses).
  • Agriculture: 131ha of rice field was washed away, buried by landslides (Son La: 119ha, Dien Bien 12ha); 124ha of corn and peanuts are damaged (Son La: 121ha, Dien Bien 3ha); 5 hectares of agricultural lands were also affected by landslide (Lai Chau: 2ha, Dien Bien: 3ha).
  • Transportation: Erosion of 13,642m3 national highway (Dien Bien: 13,442m3 on National Highway 12, NH279B, NH 279C, NH4H, Yen Bai: 200m3 on National Road 32); 40,136m3 of provincial road. In addition, the flood washed away about 3,000m of 109 road to Nam Chien commune and Nam Chien hydropower was isolated; Provincial roads to 5 communes of Muong La district are blocked by landslide and causing traffic jams.
  • Irrigation: 144 irrigation structures were damaged (Yen Bai: 141 works, Son La: 3 works); including 2000m embankment in Muong La district, Son La province.
