AHA Centre Flash Update - Flooding in Viet Nam (5 August 2015)

VIET NAM. The Viet Nam Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control reported that 17 people have died with 8 others injured due to torrential rain, floods and landslides that happened in Quang Ninh as the most affected province. Reports of floods and landslide were also reported in several areas in the Provinces of Thanh hoa, Dien Bien, Lai Chau, Cao Bang, Yen Bai, Tuyen Quang, Son La, Lang Son, Bac Kan, Quang Ninh, Bac Giang and Bac Ninh. These events have caused damage to houses and public infrastructures and have submerged hectares of rice and crop fields, as well as disruptions to number of aquacultures.

As of 4 August, the incidents have caused 30 death in total, 19 injured and 7,507 damaged houses in all affected provinces. It submerged also 15,729 ha of paddy fields. The Government has facilitated the evacuation of about 1,459 families in Quang Ninh to safer places.

Government, local authorities and committees have responded to the situation by checking the flood prevention measures and coordinate the remedial actions in the affected areas. Local leaders in the affected provinces have been assigned to lead response to the events in coordination with the military, including doing evacuation and rescuing victims.
