AHA Centre Flash Update #1: Tropical Storm 18 (Usagi) - 25 November 2018

Vietnam Meteorological Department (NCHMF) has forecasted that the tropical storm will weaken into a tropical depression at 10am with max sustained winds of 65 kph and eventually into a low pressure area of 28 kph by 10pm

  1. Vietnam CCNDPC has carried out evacuation and relocation of residents from 4 provinces / cities : Ninh Thuan, Binh Thuan, Ba Ria Vung Tau and Ho Chi Minh City.

  2. Of that, Phu Quy island district (Binh Thuan province) has already completed the relocation of 199 households / 934 people; Can Gio District (Ho Chi Minh City) plans to relocate 4,151 people (with wind storm) and 1,928 people (with tropical cyclone); For Ba Ria Vung Tau province, the displacement is expected to be 42,423 households / 158,534 people.

  3. The situation of agricultural production

  • Central Highlands: harvested 88% of winter rice area, 17.8 thousand ha.

  • South Central Coast: 66% of winter rice area was harvested, 43,700 ha of unprocessed area.

  • In the South East: harvested 21%, to 75 thousand hectares of winter rice.

  • The Mekong Delta: harvested 55% of Thu Dong area, 328 thousand hectares.

  1. Binh Thuan Province is currently still mitigating the damages caused by Tropical Depression Toraji which occurred on 18 Nov resulting in floods and landslides.

  2. Cambodia Department of Meteorology has issued warnings between Sunday (25 Nov) and Tues (27 Nov) on strong winds, heavy rain, thunderstorm and storm surges of up to 2 metres resulting from Tropical Storm “Usagi”

  3. GDACS has estimated a height of 22.3 million people being caught in the tropical storm.

  4. AHA Centre is monitoring the situation closely and will release further updates as the situation progresses.
