Operational Updates
In November, WFP provided food assistance to nearly 700,000 people through its school-based programme, livelihoods initiatives and emergency response interventions in the states of Amazonas, Anzoátegui, Apure, Barinas, Delta Amacuro, Falcón, Monagas, Sucre, Trujillo, Yaracuy and Zulia. These were the main highlights:
School based programme
• Over 400,000 students and school staff received school meals in 2,400 early education and special education schools.
• Fortified cereal (Super Cereal Plus) was provided to 32,000 children under the age of three to enhance their diets.
• WFP supported 92,000 people including students with disabilities, school personel and their families in 238 special education schools. Beneficiaries participated in sessions on the rights of people with disabilities, the barriers they face in their daily lives, and how to overcome them.
• As part of its efforts to mainstream disability and inclusion,
WFP, the Vanessa Peretti Foundation, and Humanity & Inclusion brought together organizations collaborating with WFP school-based programme to discuss nutrition and communication tailored to programs serving people with disabilities and their caregivers.
• Additional food assistance provide to 252,000 people (students’ household of students and school staff) in the most vulnerable municipalities in Anzoátegui, Falcón, Monagas, Sucre, and Yaracuy.
• To ensure school kitchens meet the conditions for preparing hot meals, WFP conducted technical training for cooperating partners' staff on standard operating procedures for school kitchen refurbishment and maintenance within the school-based programme.
Additionally, WFP carried out technical assessments in schools where the hot meals programme is currently being implemented to identify refurbishment needs for 2025.
Community based food assistance and livelihoods*
- In the state of Sucre, WFP implemented life-skills training in bakery, gastronomy, confectionery, and fishing to help households restore their livelihoods.
• As part of community based food assistance, WFP provided food assistance to over 2,300 people (584 households).
Emergency Preparedness and Response:
• After the overflow of Lake Maracaibo, WFP and Risk Management System officers in the state of Zulia identified nearly 500 families in need of immediate food assistance and hygiene supplies. WFP planning a distribution in coordination with local authorities for December.
• WFP conducted a workshop on food assistance and emergency logistics for 40 Risk Management System officers in the state of Aragua.
Interagency coordination
• The Logistics Cluster conducted a workshop on logistics and safety procedures for river transport operations in Delta Amacuro. This initiative fostered stronger collaboration between the humanitarian community and public organizations, enhancing coordination and streamlining operational processes. In addition, the Cluster shared an updated workflow on customs procedures to identify specific bottlenecks and advocate for more effective processes.
• The Food Security Cluster carried out 16 field missions to 11 states to conduct humanitarian response needs analysis workshops with partners. The Cluster supported the revision of projects submitted to the Humanitarian Response Plan for 2025, under OCHA coordination.
