Operational Updates

In December, WFP provided food assistance to almost 300,000 people through its school-based programme, livelihoods initiatives and emergency response interventions in the states of Amazonas, Anzoátegui, Apure, Barinas, Delta Amacuro, Falcón, Monagas, Sucre, Trujillo, Yaracuy and Zulia. Kindy note that due to the school holidays, the number of people assisted was significantly lower compared to previous month. These were the main highlights:

School based programme

  • 263,000 students and school staff received school meals in early education and special education schools. In addition, fortified cereal (Super Cereal Plus) was provided to 4,300 children under the age of three to enhance their diets.
  • To ensure school kitchens meet the conditions for preparing hot meals, WFP carried out technical assessments in 630 schools where the hot meals programme is currently being implemented.

Disability & Inclusion

  • WFP provided food assistance to 92,000 people including students with disabilities, school personel and their families in 238 special education schools. Beneficiaries participated in dialogues on “family as the first space of inclusion” promoting the self-reliance of people with disabilities regarding their nutrition.

Community based food assistance and livelihoods

  • WFP provided food assistance to more than 27,720 people (7,000 households) through its community based activities in the states of Apure, Amazonas and Sucre.
  • A total of 155 people participated in life skills and livelihood training combined with family food assistance, overall 536 people benefited from this action. At the end of the livelihood courses, WFP held a business fair with the participation of 46 entrepreneurs who had the opportunity to showcase their products and services.

Emergency Preparedness and Response:

• WFP distributed food assistance and hygiene kits to 500 families (some 2,000 people) affected by the overflow of Lake Maracaibo in the state of Zulia. This assistance was delivered with the support of Risk Management System officers. In addition, WFP conducted a workshop on food assistance and emergency logistics for 40 Risk Management System officers in the state of Tachira.

• WFP and the Ministry of Ecosocialism concluded the preparation of a concept note for a joint project in the Turimiquire Massif Protective Zone. The proposal is currently under review ans is expected to be submitted to the Adaptation Fund in the next months.

Interagency coordination

• The Logistics Cluster convened a Fluvial Transport Working Group to assess the impact of the local authority's proposed increase in river transport charges. Additionally, the Cluster collected data on challenges faced by diplomatic organizations when importing humanitarian goods. These activities provided critical information for future advocacy efforts aimed at mitigating the impact of these regulatory changes on the timely and efficient delivery of humanitarian assistance.

• The Food Security Cluster reviewed the projects submitted for the Humanitarian Response Plan 2025 for Venezuela. Overall, 47 projects from 44 partners organizations will contribute to food assistance and livelihoods interventions within the humanitarian response in the country.
