Venezuela – President Maduro ousted from power (DG ECHO, UN OCHA, media) (ECHO Daily Flash of 5 January 2026)

  • On 3 January 2026, Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores have been captured through the large-scale military US operation “Absolute Resolve” and indicted in the US Southern District of New York on several charges related to narcoterrorism, to appear in a Manhattan federal court today. Allegedly, more than 80 people were killed in the attack, including 32 Cuban military and intelligence members. Vice-President Delcy Rodriguez became acting President of Venezuela as ordered by the Supreme Court.
  • The security situation remains generally calm but with a sharp increase in preventive purchasing of water, food and fuel across multiple regions, rapid price inflation and growing barriers to access, including widespread cash-only transactions in foreign currency.
  • All humanitarian field operations are suspended nationwide today and tomorrow, pending further security verification. Territorial coordination mechanisms via Field Level Coordinators have been activated and migration flows monitoring has been enhanced, with no reports of change in migratory dynamics (yet).
  • All ECHO staff are safe and accounted for and remain under hibernation arrangements.
