Australians have been saddened by the news of the lives lost and suffering endured due to the disastrous floods in Venezuela.

On behalf of the Australian Government and people I wish to express deep sympathy to the people of Venezuela, particularly those who have lost loved ones and those who are still waiting for news of their family and friends.

In response to requests from the Venezuelan Government, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies for our assistance in responding to the tragic consequences of these floods, the Australian Government will make a contribution of $100,000 under the overseas aid program. This will assist in providing emergency medical and other equipment, as well as basic survival requirements such as shelter material, blankets, water purification tablets and electricity generators.

The Australian Embassy in Caracas is also providing some assistance through its Development Aid Program budget.
