Highlights

WFP Country Director for the Pacific multi-country office met with the Prime Minister of Cook Islands, Mark Brown, and other key ministers to discuss WFP's work in the region, understand local needs, explore shared priorities, and discuss potential areas of collaboration.

WFP published its mobile vulnerability analysis and mapping (mVAM) bulletins for the cross-sectional data on food security and nutrition collected for Tonga, Vanuatu and Kiribati for the third quarter of 2023.

Operational Updates

Supply Chain

  • WFP is in the process of updating the logistics capacity assessments (LCAs) in Samoa and Kiribati.
The assessment maps the national disaster mitigation and management structure, transport routes, entry and delivery points, availability of warehouses, and identifies potential Government partners and counterparts at central and provincial level. The LCA is a long-standing tool providing critical logistics information relevant to Logistics Cluster partners and the humanitarian community.

  • WFP continued to conduct an in-depth analysis and mapping of the Vanuatu National Disaster Management Office (NDMO)’s business processes, with a focus on optimising its humanitarian supply chain and logistics within the context of national and subnational emergency preparedness, response and recovery.

Emergency Telecommunication Cluster (ETC)

  • As part of its commitment to strengthening disaster preparedness in the Pacific, the ETC conducted a comprehensive three-day emergency telecommunications training for 20 first responders from the Fiji national disaster management office’s emergency planning and coordination unit. The training took place from February 12 to 28, covering central, eastern and northern divisions. The sessions encompassed vital topics such as understanding the fundamentals of effective disaster management, improving communication skills, hands-on training with radio communications, and demonstrations of various emergency telecommunications tools.

  • The ETC published its annual user satisfaction survey report for 2023. The feedback gathered from respondents showed 83 percent satisfaction rate with ETC’s preparedness and response activities.
The ETC is putting a holistic strategy in place to address the feedback provided.
