Vanuatu: Tropical Cyclones Judy & Kevin: International Deployed Assets (As of 13 March 2023)

OVERVIEW

Tropical cyclones JUDY and KEVIN (both of Cat4 intensity) made landfall over Vanuatu on the 1st and 3rd March. The National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) in Port Vila, reports some 250,000 people affected. The strong winds and substantial amounts of rain caused major flooding, damage to structures and infrastructure, and caused power outages and communication system breakdowns. The full extent of damages is not yet known, as initial assessments have only begun recently. The most impacted areas are on the eastern side of the country and on the south, including the capital Port Vila. On the 2nd of March, national authorities declared a State of Emergency, on the 5th March the SoE had been updated to include the whole country for areas that has been affected. Current priorities are related to restoring energy/power, communications , transport systems and shelter.
