Vanuatu – Judy and Kevin cyclones and earthquake impact, update (DG ECHO, NDMO, Humanitarian partners) (ECHO Daily Flash of 08 March 2023)

  • Vanuatu has been affected by two destructive cyclones and a 6.6 M earthquake between 1 - 4 of March 2023. Tropical cyclones damaged homes, livelihoods, and infrastructure and caused the loss of communications in several areas. Little information on the impact is available yet due to the challenging connectivity.
  • The DG ECHO's Rapid Response Coordinator deployed in Fiji will travel to Vanuatu as soon as access to the island is allowed to assess the situation and to determine whether DG ECHO's intervention is necessary. A crisis report on the situation will be probably published by DG ECHO today.
  • On 7 March, Vanuatu requested assistance from the Union Civil Protection Mechanism, (UCPM) for aerial capacities and vessels in support of possible evacuation, further assessment, and delivery of assistance to the people affected.
  • The Copernicus Emergency Management System was also activated in rapping mapping mode (EMSR653) and 8 maps had been produced so far.
