Following a 7.3M earthquake near Port Vila, Vanuatu, on 17 December 2024, approximately 300 aftershocks continued to be felt 4 days into search and rescue efforts. The death toll remains at 12. UNOSAT data indicate that the radius of the strong shake zone covers the entirety of the Shefa Province. Estimated figures of those affected as released by the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) is 80,000 persons. This includes 16,544 households, of which 15,151 are estimated to be women, 14,159 men and 14,104 children. Persons living with disability affected are 769 individuals, while temporarily displaced persons are reported by the National Emergency Operations Center (NEOC) to be 1698 are displaced, living with host communities and evacuation centers, with some households hosting up to 70 people.
