Highlights
- 7.3 magnitude earthquake affected more than 80,000 people, with 14 fatalities, 265 injuries and over 1,450 displaced individuals of whom 673 are children.
- The State of Emergency (SOE) concluded on 24 December 2024, with the coordination of operations transitioning to the Recovery Operation Centre (ROC) under the Prime Minister's Office.
- UNICEF is coordinating with ROC, the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO), and cluster partners to provide lief-saving response in WASH, Education, Child Protection and Health and Nutrition sectors.
- More than 50 per cent communities and evacuation centers assessed lack access to safe drinking water. UNICEF has provided clean water to over 7,000 people but gap remains.
- Post-earthquake assessments revealed that 0.8% of children are moderately malnourished, with 2.5% at high risk, there is an urgent need for expanded nutrition services. UNICEF is conducting screenings and providing nutrition support.
- UNICEF has provided psychosocial support to 647 children but urgently needs expanded mental health services.
- Over 12,655 children require temporary learning spaces (TLS) equipped with adequate WASH facilities/services and teaching/learning materials before start of the new school year on 3 Feb 2025.
- UNICEF appealed for US$ 3.3 million for immediate response activities across Health, Nutrition, WASH, Education and Child Protection services.
