Paris (dpa) - An undersea earthquake Friday off the coast of Vanuatu in the South Pacific was the biggest on record in the immediate area, France's seismological service said.
It measured 7.3 on the Richter Scale. There were no immediate reports of whether it caused a tsunami or local damage.
The Strasbourg-based service has seismological instruments around the world. It said the previous most powerful tremor in the area had been a 1990 earthquake measuring 6.4 on the scale. dpa jbp
