Tropical Cyclone Dani is now affecting Vanuatu's capital Port Vila, where gale force winds are reported with heavy rains.

The situation is improving in the northern islands of Santo and Malekula, but heavy rains still persist.

Daniel Guille reports, one person has been confirmed dead:

After reports yesterday of important damages and floodings in Luganville on the island of Santo, this morning the provincial authorities on the island of Malekula reported the death of a child crushed under a fallen tree in the township of Norsup. Fallen trees on the roads and flooding rivers block all access to rural areas. However more reports are expected from the northern islands this afternoon as radio communications with villages are re-established. Further south on the island of Efate wind is now gusting at 100 kilometres in exposed areas of Port Vila, the capital city of Vanuatu. And since ten o'clock this morning the international airport is closed.
