Situation Overview

  • The Ambae Volcano activity remains at level 2. VMGD released Volcano Alert Bulletin No.10 on 14 November, noting that imminent eruption could occur at any time and that current activity consists of ongoing steam and gas emissions.

  • Issues over land negotiations on Maewo have resurfaced, causing disturbance to the completion of land, water and environmental surveys.

  • NDMO has secured funding from MFAT to obtain building supplies for an initial 22 households for those most affected by the Ambae volcano. These supplies arrived on Maewo 20 November.

  • NDMO in partnership with IOM and Red Cross volunteers have carried out an Intention survey on Maewo. The results from this survey indicate that approximately 60 households have entered into agreements to build houses within existing Maewo communities. At least 420 households have indicated their intention to create a 2nd home on Maewo. Results of the survey will be finalized by the end of this week.

  • NDMO has developed (with thanks and acknowledgement to cluster partners for their input) the Maewo Response and Recovery Plan for consideration by government. This plan covers immediate, intermediate and long-term requirements for the 2nd home concept.

  • The latest round of food distribution has been completed on Maewo.

  • The 3rd round of Save the Children’s Cash for Work (CfW) program on Maewo is underway this week in Nasawa. In this round, 225 households will be reached with much needed cash assistance.

  • The construction of 14 Child Friendly Toilets next to Child Friendly Spaces and existing primary schools in Maewo has been completed. More than 280 children can now access appropriate and safe hygiene facilities on a daily basis.

  • 250 household kits (blankets, mosquito nets, t-shirts, rope, buckets, matches, batteries, etc.) have been transported to Maewo and are being distributed on a rolling basis as gaps/needs are identified in the field. To date, approximately 180 HH kits have been distributed

  • Education exams continue this week with school shutdowns to commence in the week ending 30 November

  • CARE has completed delivering emergency response leadership training of trainers to Ámbae and Maewo women leaders and is completing CDCCC training to a further 2 communities this week, taking the total to 11 in this current program. Additionally 20 community notice boards have been distributed and are fully or partially installed. Materials will be distributed in coming weeks to finalize these notice boards.

  • Under the CARE shelter program, the evacuation centre baseline has been completed in partnership with NDMO and the Vanuatu Red Cross. CARE has started the process of procuring materials for the evacuation centre repair works, and for the upgrade shelter kits and community toolkits from suppliers in Port Vila. Two different kits are being prepared – one for resettlement shelters for households who will be starting construction of their second homes, and one upgrade shelter kit for households who need to strengthen their temporary shelters.

  • Baseline data for the Cash Transfer Package has been completed on Sanma and data is being analysed. A total of 796 surveys have been completed across 109 sites where evacuees are located in Sanma. Surveys included data collected from host families, evacuee families, families with disabled/elderly persons, as well as market surveys and price monitoring in local shops. Registration training for all partners and stakeholders on Santo was conducted on Monday 12th November, with the first registration successfully conducted at the Terminal for 32 disabled/elderly people and their families. Identification data has been verified by chiefs and Civil Registry. The first cash transfer payments are being processed and will be delivered to these beneficiaries via Oxfam’s banking partners NBV and ANZ by Tuesday 27th November. Large-scale registration is ongoing in Sanma province as of this week across all remaining evacuee sites.

  • A Maewo Market assessment commenced on 19 November. The assessment results will provide recommendations for cash transfer design and programme appropriate for the context in Maewo

  • WASH cluster continues to work with communities to improve water supply and sanitation issues.

  • Agriculture cluster continue to provide greens to evacuees from North to South of Maewo from the food basket program

  • NGO’s and clusters continue to commence with early recovery program for Santo Evacuees
