Situation Overview
A State of Emergency is in place on the island of Ambae until the 26th September 2018.
The Vanuatu Meteorology and GeoHazard Department has the Ambae Volcano at Alert Level 3.
A full, compulsory evacuation of the island of Ambae has been completed.
All residents of Ambae have been relocated to other islands. No further movements from Ambae are expected.
The total displacement from Ambae in the last fortnight to other islands is currently estimated at 7,250 people. This is made up of 3,000 people who have relocated to Maewo and 4,250 who have relocated to Luganville, Santo.
The registration and population monitoring process on Maewo is ongoing and further details will be published at a later time. There is no formal comprehensive registration process at this time on Santo.
A team of volcano monitoring specialists from VMGD and NZ GNS returned yesterday from a mission as part of the ongoing scientific monitoring of the Ambae volcano.
The Gender and Protection cluster has received funding confirmation to support the vulnerable displaced to Luganville who are currently located at the wharf.
The Director General Ministry of Climate Change and the Deputy Police Commissioner have inspected the situation on Ambae over the weekend and observed the end of the evacuation. They are now in Maewo reviewing the evacation coordination and host communities.
25 members of the Vanuatu Mobile Force have relocated today from Ambae to Maewo to support the operation, including helping to set up shelter and security provision.
