Situation Overview

The Ambae Volcano activity still in Level 4. Mass Evacuation off Ambae Island to Santo has been ongoing since Tuesday 29th September 2017. Within the mass evacuation group, few of the displaced population are still choosing to move in with families.

Up to 3500 displaced people has been received in Santo so far and the number is expected to increase by the end of the day. 75 of which are with special needs, an estimate of 40sick patients and estimated 110 are final year students. There is need for proper counting of evacuees received in Santo. The Sanma PEOC is doing its best to control any overcrowding issuesthat may arise in Evacuation Centres.
The number of evacuation centres has increased to 24 and 9 of which are still vacant. Most of the evacuation centres are within the Luganville urban areas and few are in the peri-urban areas.

General Coordination

The Sanma Provincial Emergency Operation Centre (PEOC)taking lead in the Ambae Mass Evacuation Operation in Sanma. The Sanma PEOC is working closely with the Sanma Ambae Community, its local partners and Area Council Secretaries to coordinate the operation. The South Santo and Santo Malo Area Councils have indicate that they can accommodate some of the displaced population

The Shelter Working group is negotiating to identify more evacuation centres and build toilets where it is needed. Gender & Protection ensures counselling services are given to those with special needs,
Health working group takes responsibility to care for sick patients and pregnant mothers, Agriculture working group are making arrangements for local food to be available in the Evacuation centres.

The Evacuation Centre group hasliaised with the Sanma Ambae Community to share registration data. 3 enumerators from Statistics have arrived today to assist Logistics and Shelter working group in registration of displaced people.

More displaced people are expected to arrive today.
