Early reports of serious crop damage caused by Cyclone Donna

There are already concerns villagers in Vanuatu's north will face months of food shortages as destructive winds from Cyclone Donna take out food crops in Torba Province.

Water services have also been cut in the main village of Sola, on the island of Vanua Lava.

Vanuatu's weather authorities say the category 3 cyclone is is bringing very destructive hurricane force winds of 145 kilometres an hour, but with wind gusts up to 205 kilometres an hour.

They've issued a Red Alert for Torba Province, which is made up of around 15 islands in the Torres Islands and Banks Islands groups and has a population of around 9000 people.

Father Luc Dini is the chairman of the Torba Tourism Council and says locals are still sheltering in secure buildings, but have already been faced with flash flooding.
