People were using canals coming from Amu-Daria River. Now the canals are dry. There is organised water distribution by special transport (tanks) in those places where no hand pumps available. In general from 1.5 million population of Karakalpakstan 600000 have no access to pipe water and 420000 of them are living in rural areas. Pipeline water in rural areas is supplied from special devices - so called EKOS. It pumps water from local available source (canal, underground water from bore well etc.), treats it and distributes to the network several hours per days.
Now water is distributed for 2-3 hours per day. Local health workers are performing necessary activities to prevent outbreaks of communicable diseases. MoH representatives were sent to all districts to investigate the situation. The report will be ready tomorrow morning. Hope to provide more information later. Most likely it will be necessary to supply some kits for water treatment, medication for treatment of diarrhoeal diseases, water filters etc.
In prospective, taking into account the situation in agriculture, food items also would be necessary to provide. UNICEF is going to arrange some assistance. Details will be clear tomorrow. Dr Rodrigues (representative of UNICEF in Uzbekistan) is expected to come to Nukus today afternoon with ready proposals.
