Since 23 June, most parts of Uruguay have been experiencing extreme cold due to the arrival of a polar air mass, resulting in frost and snowfall. The areas most affected by ice and snow include Cardona, Nueva Palmira, and the mountainous regions of Lavalleja and Maldonado.
According to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), seven people have died and around 3,000 others have been affected by the very low temperatures.
Temperatures are expected to rise slightly on 25–26 June, although minimum values will likely remain between -1°C and 1°C.
