USA: MAP supplies destined for New Orleans

Throughout the year, MAP International sends hundreds of tons of essential medicines and medical supplies through the port of New Orleans, mostly destined for impoverished communities in Africa and Latin America. However, this weekend, a shipment of essential medicines and medical supplies will make its way to New Orleans as the final destination.

MAP will send a Johnson & Johnson International Disaster Module containing the literal equivalent of a ton of medicines and medical relief supplies and includes trauma supplies, analgesics, bandages, and topical ointments. These life-saving supplies are desperately needed at the West Jefferson Medical Center, a not-for-profit community hospital located in a suburban area of New Orleans.

MAP is also helping to provide infant formula and adult liquid nutrition to over 2000 people in need. These supplies will depart MAP's distribution center for a staging area in Baton Rouge this weekend.

A MAP International assessment team is heading to the region on Saturday morning to follow these shipments to their destinations. Assessment team members will also look to establish additional relief partners and supply staging areas.

Medical relief supplies that left MAP's distribution center on Wednesday have been combined with other types of relief supplies and will be delivered to a staging area in Jackson, Mississippi. FEMA will distribute these supplies where needs are the greatest and access is open.

MAP continues to need the help of its supporters in this effort. Please email a link to this webpage to your friends and family members who wish to support those affected by Hurricane Katrina. Gifts can be made through our secure online process.
