USA: InterAction members respond to Hurricane Katrina

Statement by Dr. Mohammad Akhter, CEO
InterAction sends its deepest sympathy to the victims and their families of Hurricane Katrina. We stand in solidarity with the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida.

As the largest membership organization of US-based international development and humanitarian nongovernmental organizations, we are unfortunately familiar with the human and environmental destruction after a disaster such as this. Humanitarian assistance from experienced aid organizations trained in international disaster relief, will definitely play an important role in the immediate effort to save lives and prevent the outbreak of diseases in the affected areas.

A good number of InterAction members have reached out to the devastated region and are doing what they do best -- providing much needed access to food, shelter and medicine. We encourage the spirit of generosity, and have provided our Guide to Giving for those seeking to provide assistance to the victims of this disaster.

We will continue to work with our members as they assist victims in rebuilding their lives, homes and communities.
