Operational Updates
Refugees and Host Communities: WFP continues to provide inkind food assistance to refugees, covering 82 percent of the 2,100 total required calories while supporting vulnerable individuals and hospital patients. High-energy biscuits and hot meals were distributed to Burundian refugees undergoing voluntary repatriation and new arrivals from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). However, voluntary repatriation convoys were suspended mid-month due to low registration numbers.
Following escalating violence in eastern DRC, the Ministry of Home Affairs convened an emergency meeting with humanitarian agencies in Kigoma, DRC, to discuss preparedness measures for a potential influx of asylum seekers. Agencies such as WFP were advised to strengthen preparedness to ensure an effective response. As a result, the contingency plan was updated accordingly.
As part of its support to host communities, WFP distributed 5,000 clean and energy-efficient Jiko Rafiki stoves to registered households across 13 villages in Kasulu and Kibondo. The project, registered under the Gold Standard for carbon credit trading, aims to reinvest revenue into its expansion. Distribution was coordinated by WFP, OffGrid Sun, and local governments, ensuring effective implementation and community engagement.
