This Weekly Bulletin focuses on public health emergencies occurring in the WHO African region. This week’s articles cover:
- Cholera in Tanzania
- Mpox in Angola
For each of these events, a brief description, followed by public health measures implemented and an interpretation of the situation, is provided.
A table is provided at the end of the bulletin with information on all new and ongoing public health events currently being monitored in the region, as well as recent events that have been controlled and closed.
The protracted cholera outbreak in Tanzania has faced key response challenges, including inadequate funding for response interventions and limited access to clean water, sanitation, and handwashing facilities. Resource gaps, including shortages of essential health supplies, especially in Katavi, further hinder containment efforts. Additionally, misconceptions about water treatment, poor health-seeking behaviours, and insufficient support for healthcare workers at treatment centres pose significant barriers to effective outbreak management.
