Tanzania - Landslide (IFRC, Meteo Tanzania) (ECHO Daily Flash of 27 March 2026)

  • In recent days, torrential rain has affected Rungwe District in south‑eastern Tanzania, triggering a landslide and causing casualties and damage. The event hit several wards, including Nkunga, Lupepo, Kawetele and Ikuti.

  • According to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), 18 people have died (including 14 children) and five others have been injured. Several houses have been destroyed, leaving families homeless. Moreover, some people are feared to be trapped under the debris, and search‑and‑rescue operations led by the authorities are ongoing.

  • For the next three days, cloudy skies and light to moderate rain with thunderstorms are forecast across the affected district.
