Floods caused by heavy rains in Kilwa District (Tanzania) have killed 46 people with several others reported missing. More than 2,104 people have been rendered homeless in nine affected villages at Kivinje and Njia.
2. NATIONAL AND COUNTRY LEVEL INTERNATIONAL RESPONSE
An assessment team comprising of Government and United Nations Officials will depart to the affected area on 4 or 5 April.
3. REQUIREMENTS FOR INTERNATIONAL ASSISTANCE
The Tanzania Government has officially requested international assistance. A meeting of the United Nations Disaster Management Team (UNDMT) is being convened by the United Nations Resident Coordinator.
DHA-Geneva is providing Emergency Grant USD 20,000 to meet immediate needs in the disaster.
DHA is prepared to serve as a channel for cash contributions, to be used during the immediate relief phase, in coordination with relevant organizations of the UN system. DHA provides donor Governments with written confirmation on the utilization of funds contributed. Funds may also be channelled directly to UN agencies.
